Desert National Park is a beautiful place, located in the Jaisalmer district of the state of Rajasthan. Desert National Park is one of the largest national parks in India. The Desert National Park is also a protected sanctuary. The Desert protected sanctuary was declared as a National park in 1980. The total area of the National park is about 3162 km2. The desert is a harsh place to sustain life and thus most of the fauna and flora live on the edge. 

The Desert National Park is dotted with Padam Talao Lake, Rajbaugh Lake, Milak Lake. It abounds in flora and fauna. It is one of the most popular Indian wildlife reserves. There are a large number of reptiles also found dwelling in the desert park of Jaisalmer. The monitor lizards, spiny tail lizards, saw-scaled vipers are abundantly found. Desert National Park, Jaisalmer is the treasure trove of wild animals such as black bucks, chinkaras, hares, wolves, desert cats, desert foxes. Birdlife in this sandy habitat is vivid and spectacular. Birds such as the sand grouse, partridges, bee-eaters, larks and shrikes are usually seen. Bird watchers and bird photographers should not give this place a miss as well. In the park, you can go for Park rides, jeep safaris, camel rides, bird watching excursions and nature walks. Jeep Safari enables tourists to explore a wider area of the park in relatively short span of time

How to Reach -

By Air - Nearest airport is Jaisalmer airport located 45 km from the Desert National Park. However, this airport is managed by Indian Air Force is functional only from September to March. Jodhpur airport is located 322 km, and it is well connected to other major cities.

By train - From Delhi to Jaisalmer by train, Jaisalmer railway station located 42 km from the Desert National Park.and then road transport.

By road - RSRTC buses run regularly from Delhi to Rajasthan. Since it falls under the military region, the Desert National Park is connected to Jaisalmer by well-maintained roads. So Regular buses run by the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation are available.

Distance - Delhi to Jaisalmer - 882 kms, Jaisalmer to Desert National Park - 40 kms

Dominant fauna - 

Birds - Great Indian Bustard, Falcons, Eagles, Vultures, Bee-Eaters, Shrikes, Larks, Demoiselle Crane, Macqueen’s Bustard, Sandgrouse, Long-Legged, Honey Buzzards, chats, babblers, kites etc.

Mammals - Camel, Desert Fox, Bengal Fox, Chinkara, Wolf, Desert Cat, Blackbuck, Hedgehog, Nilgai etc.

Reptiles - Russell’s viper, Saw Scaled Viper, Monitor Lizard, Spiny-tailed lizard, Saw-scaled viper, Common Krait, Spiny Tailed Lizard, Gecko, Persian Gecko etc.

Facts - 

  • Carry binoculars along with you.
  • Collect and exchange as much small change as practical, very few people seem to have changed, especially in rural areas.
  • In the city you can travel by un-metered auto-rickshaws, buses, cycle-rickshaws or you can also use car cabs and car-taxi. The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation operates regular bus service for the local city tour.

  • Long-sleeve shirt, long trousers, sneakers or other types of solid shoes. Remember, the sun is fierce!

Other Attractions in the Vicinity - 

Akal Wood Fossil Park - It is 17 kms from Jaisalmer, holds a natural flora and faunas fossils that are estimated to be around 160 million years old. These fossils are quite rare.

Pokran - It is a fort town. Pokran has a museum of weaponry, brocade clothes.

Other Information - 

Food and mineral water will be given at all times. Our cooks use only mineral water when cooking meals.

The meal will be purely vegetarian and freshly cooked over a campfire.

You are not required to bring a sleeping bag. You will be provided clean bedrolls, this will keep you warm.
