Mata Vaishno devi temple is situated in the state of Jammu & Kashmir and it is a holy place of the Hindu Religion. It is also surrounded by the Trikuta hills of the Himalayas. The nearest town in the foothills is Katra and falls under the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir State. The holy temple of Mata Vaishno Devi is situated approximately 10 km from the Bus Stand / Railway Station of Katra. Helicopter service is also available from Katra to Sanjhi Chhat which is approximate 2 kms far away from the temple. Please note that Tour to Maa Vaishno Devi should be planned in advance to avoid a huge rush. Due to huge rush hotels and the guest house gets sold out which leads to the nonavailability of rooms.

The 'Aarti' of the Goddess is performed twice a day

• First time in the morning just before the sunrise

• The second time in the evening immediately after the sunset.

Brief of the visit is follows

We started our journey by Jammu mail train from Delhi. Train left Delhi at 8:10 pm and reached Katra at about 11:05 am. We stayed in the hotel to take a bath and After Lunch, we started our journey on foot. We took a bath at the Banganga checkpoint and continued walking.

Note: There is horse service available, Pithu (men pick the kids / old men on back) and Waggies (for disabled/old persons who cannot walk).

For a healthy and fit person, it will take approximately 4 - 5 hours of walk to reach the temple. However, it is an interesting journey and you won't feel tired if you are walking with the true spirit of pilgrimage in your heart.

On the way to the temple, you can get blessings at the following places.

• Charanpaduka

• Ardhkuwari

• Hathi Matha

We reached the temple at 5:00 pm. We took a short bath in the temple and stood in a long line to worship Mata Vaishno Devi. It was pretty crowded and we had to stand in line for more than 2 hours to reach the worship place.

After blessings, we had dinner in the trust's Food joint near the temple. And continued our journey towards the Bhairon temple. According to the instructions of Shastras, the journey of Mata Vaishno Devi will not be completed without visiting the Bhairon temple and take the blessings of the Lord Bhairon. It is situated approximately 4-5 Kms further up in the hills from the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. We reached Bhairon Temple at 12:00 midnight.

We spent about two hours walking around, praying, and enjoying the place. Then started back walking journey at 2:00 am and reached Katra at 7:00 am in the morning. We went back to our hotel in Katra and took a rest for 4 to 5 hours. The remaining day we roamed around and enjoyed the local market with shopping and the Next day We reached Delhi by Swaraj Express. Altogether, it was a pleasant trip, rejuvenating mind and body. We were tired after the several hours of travel and walking but the kind of relaxation and peace of mind we experienced after this pilgrimage was tremendous. We recommend booking your hotels and horse in advance if needed since there is a shortage of such facilities and it gets sold out very soon. 

How to reach Mata Vaishno Devi Temple

You can reach Katra by air, train, bus, and car. and Katra is the base camp point to start the journey. Don't forget to book your accommodation in advance to avoid problems.

By Air:

The airport is not so close, though. The nearest Airport is Jammu, which is approximately 50 km from Katra. Jammu is well-connected with major airports in India. It's easy to get a cab from the Jammu airport to Katra as regular taxi and cab services are available. you can reach Katra in an hour.

By Train:

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station at Katra is the nearest railway station from the holy cave of Vaishno Devi. Regular train services come from almost every major city of India.

Note: Luxurious accommodation is also available near the railway station but it needs to be booked in advance since the no. of visitors is more and hotels are less in comparison to that. 

By Road:

Regular bus services ply to and fro the base of the pilgrimage, that is Katra. Buses, at extremely affordable rates but bit crow, are available from places like New Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu Tawi as the list goes on. You can also take a shared taxi or cab once you've arrived at Jammu Tawi.

Helicopter Booking for Vaishno Devi

The base camp Katra is located at an altitude of 2500 feet above sea level whereas Mata's Bhawan is located at 5200 feet. The distance between Katra to the main shrine is approximately 13 Km. by trekking through the roads on Trikuta Mountain. One of the most preferred routes to reach Vaishno Devi is through the helicopters. The shrine board has made it easier for the devotees to undertake the Helicopter Darshan for Vaishno Devi. The visit to the holy shrine within the folds of Trikuta Mountain, via helicopter, is just the start of this ecstatic and thrilling journey. There are certain rules to book your helicopter ticket which need to be followed carefully else your ticket may get cancel if you don't follow the terms and conditions correctly.
