JAISALMER - RAJASTHAN

Jaisalmer pronunciation, nicknamed "The Golden city", is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, located 575 kilometers (357 mi) west of the state capital Jaipur. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone and is crowned by the ancient Jaisalmer Fort. This fort contains a royal palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples of both the fort and of the town below are built of finely sculptured sandstone. The town lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert) and has a population, including the residents of the fort, of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District. Jaisalmer was once the capital of Jaisalmer State.

Jaisalmer was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer means the Hill Fort of Jaisal. Jaisalmer is sometimes called the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sandstone used throughout the architecture of both the fort and the town below, imbues both with a certain golden-yellow light.
Jaisalmer, being an arid desert region, is prone to extremes in terms of temperature. The temperature varies greatly from day to night in both summer and winter. The maximum summer temperature is around 49 °C (120 °F) while the minimum is 25 °C (77 °F). The maximum winter temperature is usually around 23.6 °C (74.5 °F) and the minimum is 5 °C (41 °F). The average rainfall is 209.5 millimetres (8.25 in). Highest ever recorded temperature was 50.0 °C (122.0 °F); the lowest ever recorded temperature being −5.9 °C (21.4 °F). Temperature of up to 52.4 °C (126.3 °F) have been recorded near the international border close to Pakistan, but standard conditions of this temperature recording remain unverified. According to the 2011 census, Jaisalmer had a population of 65,471. Around 90% of the population is Hindu, 8.20% is Muslim and the remaining are Sikhs, Christians, and Jains.
Tourism is a major industry in Jaisalmer. The Government of India initiated departmental exploration for oil in 1955–56 in the Jaisalmer area. Oil India Limited discovered natural gas in 1988 in the Jaisalmer basin. Musicians and dancers are also a major cultural export from Jaisalmer to the rest of the world. Manganiyar musicians have played the world over, and Queen Harish, the dancing desert drag queen, has toured the world over and has featured in international movies. Jaisalmer is also known for its leather messenger bags, made from wild camels native to the area.

HOW TO REACH JAISALMER

BY AIR

Jaisalmer doesn’t have a commercial airport as of yet. It does have a military airport which supports chartered flights only and these are not often used by tourists. The closest domestic airport here is Jodhpur Airport, which is the best way to reach Jaisalmer by air. There are regular flights to Jodhpur from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Udaipur. From the airport, it will take you around 5 to 6 hours to reach Jaisalmer. Most people hire prepaid taxis or private taxis to reach Jaisalmer from Jodhpur Airport. However, these also tend to be a little expensive. Another option would be to fly to Delhi Airport, which is an international airport and is connected to numerous countries across the world. From Delhi, you would have to take the road or train to reach Jaisalmer.

BY TRAIN

Travelling to Jaisalmer by train is a good idea as it is connected to several cities by train. There are several options for travellers from most places in India. Trains from Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaipur are common and some of the popular trains here are Delhi Jaisalmer Express, Howrah Jaisalmer Express and Lalgarh Jaisalmer Special, to name a few. Do remember that most of these trains run a little late, so be prepared for the delay. Also, the luxury train - Palace on Wheels - stops in Jaisalmer every Sunday. At the station, you can get an autorickshaw or a private taxi to take you into the town. These don’t charge too much.
Also check about the best time to visit Jaisalmer before you plan your journey to Jaisalmer.

BY BUS

There are no direct buses from Delhi to Jaisalmer as it takes around 17 hours at the very least and the drive can be too long at a stretch. However, you can reach Jaipur and switch buses. You can also travel to Jodhpur and switch a bus to reach Jaisalmer. From Jaipur or Jodhpur, buses to Jaisalmer leave often and there are state-run sleeper coaches which you can get on, to reach the city. Tickets are limited, more often than not, so it’s a good idea to book the tickets in advance. There are buses from Udaipur and Bikaner also, which you can use to reach Jaisalmer.

WHEN TO VISIT JAISALMER

Peak Season (October-March)
The months from November to March constitute the winter season in Jaisalmer, the best time to visit. As the maximum temperature doesn’t go beyond 24°C, it is the perfect weather for sightseeing and outdoor activities such as desert safari, camel rides. Evenings are cooler and it can get a little cold at night.
Shoulder Season (July-September)
We call it the monsoon because it sometimes rains a bit in Jaisalmer between July and September, but not enough to put a dampener on your plans. The few showers don’t do much to provide a respite from the summer heat, and in fact, can make the season humid. However, monsoon is a good time to travel to Jaisalmer and explore some of the mystical wonders of this ancient land.
Low Season (April-June)
Avoid Jaisalmer during summer, unless you love getting roasted. The months from April to June will see Jaisalmer facing a hot and harsh sun, and this is more so because of the proximity of the city with the Thar Desert. There isn’t much sightseeing or other tourist activities that you can enjoy because everything stops during the summer. When you can’t step out of your air-conditioned hotel room, it is merely a waste of money visiting Jaisalmer around this time.
