Chopta ( Ukhimath_Rudraprayag )
Chopta is a beautiful meadow in Rudraprayag district. Beautiful meadows with dense forest at some places. One should visit Deoria tal and Tungnath temple. Its a mild trek. Chopta is a beautiful small town perched at about 2800 meters above MSL. The place is unspoiled as very few tourists visit this place. Its a good place to do small treks with moderate level of difficulty.The place serves as the base camp to climb Tunganath and further to Chandrashila which is located at over 4000 meters above MSL. The climb to chandrashila is one of its kind experience as you can get a 360 degrees view from the top. The peak is covered with snow from December to March. Chopta lies on the motorable road which connects Guptkashi with Gopeshwar. We had gone there in the month of April and there was still some snow at Chandrashila. Once we reached at the top, it was unhindered view of peaks like Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Nandadevi, Kamet. Chopta is a great destination if you wish to undertake treks to Tungnath temple and Chandrashila Peak.The views to Chaukhamba and Kedarnath peaks is awesome. The place has few campsites which need to be booked in advance to avoid sold out, but doesn't have good hotels and restaurants.It is one of the places to get snow early in the region.
Word of caution:
Since Chopta is well above 8000 feet above MSL, Chandrashila at 13500 feet above MSL, there could be some mountain sickness issues to some travelers. Kindly adjust yourself with the altitude gradually and then attempt the climb to Chandrashila. Strictly NO for old age people and those who have joints pain issue as climb could be quite steep for them.
