Home to the endangered Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Morigaon district of Assam. Boasting of the highest density of Indian rhinos, the sanctuary is 50 km east of Guwahati. Pobitora along with Kaziranga National Park and Manas Wildlife Sanctuary form the three most important reserves for the protection of Indian rhinos. The sanctuary stretches over 38 km and has a swampy marshland which is a perfect habitat for the rhinos, wild buffalos .and the wild boars. There are a few embankments through the parks and rough roads have been built for the jeeps to tread.Home to the densest population of One-horned Rhinos in the world, the Pobitora Wildlife sanctuary is a small heaven for the wildlife lovers, situated 30 km to the east of Guwahati. It is one of the two treasure troves of the famed and endangered one-horned Rhinos in the world coupled with an amazing birdlife which has earned it the tag of Bharatpur of the East. It has gained immense popularity due to its closeness to Guwahati and as a stopover en route to Kaziranga National Park.The Wildlife Sanctuary which is spread over an area of just 38 sq. kilometers is a small, heavenly segment of raw wilderness and greenery. The refreshing breeze of the lower Himalayas, the greenness, and calm of the sanctuary and the thrill of being one with nature is enough to tempt anyone for a visit to this amazing place. The dense population of Rhinos allows one a greater chance of sighting the endangered creature while on Elephant or jeep safaris.

Legend has it that the King of Mayong gave the name Pobitara to the forest after his lovely daughter who died in her youth. In 1971, the forest was declared a reserve forest to protect the famous rhinos. In 1987, Pobitora has declared a wildlife sanctuary. A census of rhinos counted in 2006 pegged their number at 81. Pobitora boasts of the highest density of rhinos and sightings of the beasts are assured during a visit to the sanctuary. The high density of the animals has also resulted in translocation of some to Manas National Park.

Animals like the Asiatic buffalos, leopards, wild bear, civet cat, etc. are found in the sanctuary. The sanctuary is also an ideal for bird watching. It consists of more than 2000 migratory birds. Several residents and migratory birds such as Indian pied hornbill, osprey, hill myna, kalij pheasant, etc. are found in the reserve. Due to its rich birdlife, the sanctuary is also called as the ‘Bharatpur of the East’. Various species of reptiles like Indian python, common monitor lizard, Indian tent turtle, Indian cobra are also found in the sanctuary.

The nearest accommodation to Pobitora is at its own entrance on the west side. Other accommodations are available in the Mayang Village, nine km north of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Tourists prefer to stay at Guwahati, where a range of luxury and budget hotels are available. There are no eating options in the sanctuary. Fish is a major delicacy in Assam and one can find lip-smacking food at cheap rates in Paltan Bazar. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between November and March. Visiting the sanctuary during the monsoon season is not advisable.

How to Reach in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary :
By Train:
The nearest railhead is at Jagiroad which is well connected to Guwahati. From Jagiroad, you can take public buses or a cab. There are a number of trains that connect Guwahati to all major cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Further, there are buses and taxis available to reach the main city.
By Road:
From Guwahati, Pobitora is a 2 hours ride via a narrow road. If coming from Kaziranga on NH 37 take the route for Mayang at Jagiroad. Buses are available from Adabari Bus Station in Guwahati till Chamata. From Chamata catch a public bus for Kolangpur and take an auto rickshaw to the Sanctuary. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Guwahati till Morigaon and a bus from Morigaon till the Sanctuary. There are sufficient numbers of scheduled buses available such as private, local, luxury or Volvo connecting Guwahati to other major parts of India such as Delhi (1787km), Assam (169km), Gangtok (525km), Shillong (134km) and Darjeeling (490km).
By Air:
Located at a distance of around 25km away from the main city center, the nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport, well-connected to all major cities in India including Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Regular flights operate from Kolkata, Mumbai, and Goa. Further, taxi and bus services are available to travel from airport to the main city.
Best time to visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary:
The best time to visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to February as the climate around that time is pleasant during the day and chilly at night. One needs to carry along adequate amounts of woolens during the months of December-January due to extreme cold. Monsoon period should be strictly avoided as the region is prone to flash floods and the conditions of the roads make traveling almost impossible.
Where to Stay:
There is only one place to stay in the area which is a privately run hotel situated near the main entrance to the sanctuary. Alternatively, you can seek accommodation in Guwahati which is very close to the wildlife sanctuary and offers more variety and choice.

One-horned Rhinos, Jackal, Elephants, Wild Boars, and diverse birdlife are to keep you busy at the park.

Parbitora park is best combined with a visit to the Kaziranga National Park. Arrive at the sanctuary at 6:30 am and take the elephant ride or the jeep ride into the park and spend a good 2-3 hours exploring the natural treasures it fosters. After this proceed to the Kaziranga National Park.
Tips:
The park finds itself crowded during weekends and the holiday season, so try to reach early in order to book elephant rides as they tend to be in short supply during the peak season.
