The Mystery

Wondering how these skeletons got here? Was there a battle fought here? Or a group of herders or passersby got stuck in the snow and couldn’t move ahead? Well, there are many different theories around it. Scientists have discovered that these skeletons belong to more than one group of people. While one group seems to have been of local herders, DNA tests confirmed the other to be of the Chitpavans of Maharashtra. The lake and the area around it will soon be developed as an eco-tourism destination owing to a regular disappearance of skeletons from the area.

Mythology of Roopkund

According to the Hindu mythology, when Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva were heading to Kailash after annihilating the demons, the goddess wanted to clean herself. Shiva then created a 'kund' or lake with the help of his Trishul so his consort can have a bath. While taking a dip in the lake, Parvati saw her beautiful reflection and was bewitched by it. Hence, the lake was named as Roopkund. While, the other legend states that, Raja Jasdhaval, the King of Kanauj angered the Goddess Nanda Devi by taking his pregnant wife along with numerous dancers, musicians, and servants on a pilgrimage to Nanda Devi shrine. Having disturbed the peace of her sacred land with their elaborate entourage, Rani Balampa, the Queen of Raja Jasdhaval then delivered a baby at a cave nearby (considered as unclean for a certain period of time). The entourage followed by other unpleasant events infuriated the Goddess and she showed her wrath in the form of a severe storm. It is believed that hailstones as big as tennis ball fell on the head of the pilgrims, which lead to their sudden death.

Roopkund Trekking

This is actually an awesome place to trek to and to start a trek from. It is right at the base of two towering peaks - Nanda Ghunti (6,300 metres) and Trishul (7,000 metres). Trekkers head up to Lohajung; and from there, the next destination is Ran ki Dhar, the area around which is flat and perfect for a camp out.

Bedni Bugyal, the next stop is 13 kilometres from Wan. Standing on the Bedni Bugyal bridge is an experience nonpareil. You'll see many mountain peaks from here. Trekkers who still want to go further, go up to the tumultuous area of Bhagwabasa, around 10 kilometres away. You'll get to see some amazing waterfalls around the area; but you can’t stay here due to the hostile weather conditions. Trekking further will lead you to Shila Samundra and finally to Homkund.
