MUDUMALAI - TAMIL NADU

Mudumalai National Park is a national park in the Nilgiri Mountains in Tamil Nadu, south India. It covers 321 km2 (124 sq mi) at an elevation range of 850–1,250 m (2,790–4,100 ft) in the Nilgiri District and shares boundaries with the states of Karnataka and Kerala. A part of this area has been protected since 1940. The national park has been part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve since 1986 and was declared a tiger reserve together with a buffer zone of 367.59 km2 (141.93 sq mi) in 2007. It receives an annual rainfall of about 1,420 mm (56 in) and harbors tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests with 498 plant species, at least 266 bird species, 18 carnivores, and 10 herbivore species. It is drained by the Moyar River and several tributaries, which harbor 38 fish species.

Traffic on three public roads passing through the national park has caused significant roadkills for mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The park's northern part has been affected by several wildfires since 1999.
The word Mudumalai is a Tamil word with 'mutu' meaning old, ancient, original; and 'mudhukadu' meaning ancient forest. The word 'malai' means hill or mountain. The name 'Mudumalai forest' was already in use when the British Government rented the forest in 1857 for logging purposes from the Raja of Neelambur. In 1914, large forest tracts on the Sigur Plateau were declared as reserve forests for systematic logging. An area of about 60 km2 (23 sq mi) was established as Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in 1940. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1977 and incorporated into Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in 1986. It was declared as a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in April 2007 and notified as 'Critical Tiger Habitat' in December 2007. At the time, in 1947 people lived in 28 hamlets inside the reserve; they kept about 1,060 cattle. In 2010, it was proposed to resettle them. This notification was criticized by activists and conservationists as having been intransparent and undemocratic.

In 2010, the National Tiger Conservation Authority approved the release of funds to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the frame of Project Tiger. In 2020, Project Tiger has been extended until 2021 with funding of ₹ 114.1 million borne by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu.

WHEN TO VISIT MUDUMALAI

Summer (March-May):

Summers are dry, with hot days and pleasant nights. The deciduous trees have begun shedding their foliage and the animals, the big game, if you are lucky, gather at the water holes. There might be the rare mango showers, but they help to perk up the greenery. Summer makes the forest hot, but is the ideal time to venture into the jungle on a safari to watch the animals. Carry your camera along to photoshoot the orange-red Flame of the Forest flowers that burst into summer blooms.

Monsoon (June - November):

Monsoon showers are not torrential. There are occasional, intermittent showers that do enliven the atmosphere to no end. The western region gets rainfall during the southwest monsoon from June to September, while the eastern sides receive the northeast monsoon showers from October to November. It’s quite a charming season, but you might be unable to go on safaris if the rain clouds gather. Monsoon is the mating season and you could find peacocks putting on a spectacular show for their mates. Northeast monsoon rains patter away by November.

Winter (December – February):

The days are pleasant, with clear blue skies and misty mornings. Nights are cold and it wouldn’t do any harm if you carry sweaters along if you are going to stay in the resorts in Mudumalai during winter. When sharp nippy mornings clear up, you can see a variety of forest-dwelling birds that have migrated in for winter. Ideally, this is the best time to visit Mudumalai.
